Many students have no access to reading material in the summer months. These students are commonly reading below their grade level peers. The most direct answer to this problem is school supported summer reading. In this session we will look at the summer reading program at College Community School District modeled on the work of literacy expert Richard Allington. Highlights include of the program:
  • providing 10 books for student home collection.
  • discussing the wide range of books to choose from.
  • allowing student choice of titles for home.
  • leveraging technology to maintain contact and conversation around reading.
Leave this session with specific ideas that will make you the champion of a new approach to summer reading in your school and district.
